Synopsis:

Oh Sung-Moo became a famous webtoon writer when he wrote W since 2007. His fame came from writing a story about Kang Cheol, a gold medalist marksman, diligent and bright student but he was accused of killing his own family, his father, mother and siblings using his own gun. He was incarcerated because of an ambitious prosecutor who had political dreams and using Kang Cheol’s case as his stepping stone. Yet, Kang Cheol was acquitted in the Supreme Court due to lack of evidence. Kang Cheol became successful after that and dedicated his life trying to find his family’s killer. Before Kang Cheol’s success, he tried to commit suicide and this event was written during the time Oh Sung-Moo’s despair when his wife and daughter, Oh Yeon-Joo, left him because he’s an alcoholic. Oh Sung-Moo’s tried to end the story, yet when he woke up, the story was written differently, the main character, Kang Cheol decided to survive instead and find justice not only for his family but support those wrongfully accused. Oh Sung-Moo was surprised of the 180 degrees change and turn of events of his own story but began to continue to write about Kang Cheol’s seek for justice until Oh Sung-Moo began to see that his real world is blending with the reel world he created and this time around even suck his very own daughter, Oh Yeon-Joo, who is now a cardiothoracic surgeon. Oh Yeon-Joo went into the webtoon and met Kang Cheol. She now became a part of the story that her father created. However, blending the comic and the real world made everything complicated within and outside Oh Yeon-Joo’s and everyone’s reality including the villains in the comic world. All the characters became in danger and Kang Cheol’s happy ending with Oh Yeon-Joo in the “real” world will never happen until they are able to stop the one who is now pulling the strings of the remaining story of W.

My Review:

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

This K-Drama is uniquely creative including the premise of it. I’ve never had such fun watching a romcom since DOTS (Descendants of the Sun). A lot of the detractors of DOTS will definitely love this as this has a concise story filled both with suspense and love story. It is intricately woven to justify the meshing of the real and reel world of Oh Yeon-Joo whom a lot of her photos looks like Song Hye-Kyo. You know that a K-Drama is good when the time passes by too quickly and W is certainly one of those K-Drama.
(1) The story was truly fast pace from Episode 1. There’s no inconsequential events that are not necessary. I love it because it is rare for K-Dramas who are sometimes full of it to fill the time.

(2) The special effects are truly admirable and executed brilliantly.

(3) There’s just great chemistry between the two characters. Never found Lee Jong-Suk my cup of tea for a K-Drama actor until now. He looks like a man here and just explodes with charm especially when he is with Han Hyo-Joo. Guess they are all following the footsteps of Song Joong-Ki’s looks and acting like a man even if he has boyish looks. It just resonates where the K-Dramas’ gold standard now.

(4) There are a lot of twists that truly surprises you. It’s not afraid to take risks, so, it never becomes boring and make it truly suspenseful in a romcom sort of style.

(5) The writer, directors and the actors deliver a truly engaging romcom K-Drama that has thrill on it. Extremely refreshing to have a a unique plot unlike most K-Drama plots. Must give special mention and credit to 2 supporting actors of this K-Drama, Lee Si-Eon as Park Soo-Bong and Kim Eui-Sung as Oh Sung-Moo for such exceptional performances.

(6) The OST is exceptional. Too many beautiful songs.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

It’s such a wonderful experience when you get to enjoy watching such a complex but totally entertaining K-Drama. However, there are some but not a lot that sort of affected my unadulterated enjoyment that I wish the production did better.

(1) Minute details especially in handling medical scenes particularly if the character is a doctor. Normally, a regular person as a patient is not much fun to be with, more so, imagine if the person has a medical background and even worse a doctor, that instead of giving the treatment one is at the receiving end of it. So, why is she acting that way in certain scenes? Moreover, due to training, we normally act more decisive of what needs to be done on our very own treatment unless it is impossible for us to do so. It has been an often gripe on my part on how K-Dramas handle medical scenes. More often than not it falls flat on making it more professional and believable. It doesn’t require much to do it properly.

(2) The premise of the story is unique, however, it became a bit complicated and confusing especially on the latter episodes. I can still follow and understand the blending of the two worlds, but, the manner of editing with time jumping from one time to another including which world the characters are plus flashbacks and “hopes to be” makes my head hurts. Because of too many things to figure out as an audience including reading its subtitle somehow lessens my enjoyment.

(3) During Episode 13, when Kang Cheol needs to save Oh Yeon-Joo, how come he can’t conjure the villain to be transported to the real world instead as he can do that if he is thinking about the character? Or, am I lost again in translation?

(4) The ending is as expected, it was kinda anti-climactic and somehow fell a little flat. It is probably because my excitement were spent so much from the previous much better written and interesting episodes. There’s a feeling of rush on its presentation, certain scenario has been repetitive and certain unexplainable logic especially on the last 3 episodes. And, although, I was a little sad it was over, it wasn’t at the same level when DOTS (Descendants of the Sun) ended.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? A Definite YES
