Synopsis:

It is a story of friendship that was formed since their childhood days in their school van and became known as the Bongo group. They are Sa Jin Jin who became a popular actress, Jang Young Shim who became a lawyer, Han Ah Reum who became a flight attendant and the only male in the group, Gong Ji Won who became an investment banker. Although, they became good at what they do, it became difficult for them to find love. And, Gong Ji Won and Sa Jin Jin who have been each other first love never really forgotten each other after being separated for so many years. Their second chance got even complicated when Sa Jin Jin’s idol since she was young, Anthony, a former member of a popular boy band and brother of Gong Ji Won got into the mix of things. It unfolds the stories of friends, their support for each other and finding their love in the 20th century.

My Review:

I watched this k-drama like most of the dramas that I tried because it was recommended by one of the review sites I respected. However, at the end of the day, I always judge k-dramas according to my own taste afterwards, thus, I don’t place too much expectations when I do decide to watch something that’s recommended because, after all, taste sometimes differ from one person to another. Luckily, most of the time, the k-dramas I ended up watching turns out to be more of hits rather than misses, so, I am always encouraged to take this route in some of my choices and for this k-drama, I went ahead and check it out. I must say with this k-drama, I am surely glad that I did.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) I like how they depict the friendship among the 4 characters. Although, the relationship between Gong Ji Won and Sa Jin Jin can never be categorized as purely friends but still their friendship rise above whatever trials they went through. I love their support system towards each other. I’ve always believed that one of the best blessings here on earth is being able to find at least 1 true friend and on this k-drama, it wasn’t even just one. There’s no jealousy and just pure love and support among them. It was kinda heartwarming to watch. How I wish I do have friends like that with time to spare for you in the busy world we live in.

(2) I have recently watched another realistic drama, “Because This Is My First Life”, that I immensely enjoyed, and the same can be said on this k-drama. The recommendation on the review site I often frequented was right of the bat in its recommendation. This is one of the normal and realistic k-dramas that is truly fun to watch. There are no chaebols and fantasy premise on the story but still the k-drama was able to successfully delivered a story that will not bore one to tears.

(3) All the actors are great and this is the first time that I got confused on who to root for to be with the leading lady as both men are quite delightful and dreamy. Lee Sang Woo as Anthony, the other man of the love triangle is as charming and even more good looking as Kim Ji Suk as Gong Ji Won. Each of them have great qualities that one would like to have in a man and either way having men like them fall for you at the same time is quite a feat for any woman.

(4) There’s no villain here, just normal and regular emotions of human beings who go through such experiences, thus, creating conflicts. Han Ye Seul as Sa Jin Jin is not the stereo typical superstar that has a diva complex. Lee Sang Woo as Anthony normally went through the difficulty of accepting not being a star anymore in comparison when he was still in the boy band. Kim Ji Suk as Gong Ji Won normally went through fear of loving again. Ryu Hyun Kyung as Han Ah Reum, normally went through a lot of rejections from men because of her weight issues or insecurities resulting to feeling and actions of desperation when she falls in love and turns off the men she pursue. Moreover, even with this insecurities, like a true friend, she didn’t feel resentment against Sa Jin Jin, who is popular and beautiful and Han Ah Reum’s bravery to finally stand on her ground of who she is, are quite inspiring to watch. Lee Sang Hee as Jang Young Shim, who normally went through the angst of her parents imminent separation even if she felt it was the right thing to do for her mother’s sake. And, lastly but not the least, the side stories of their parents and the things they also went through. In short, it was truly a variety of regular stories of normal people yet depicted by the director and the writer/s in an engaging manner.

(5) It is true that sometimes we often felt that famous people got it all but, they do indeed go through the same things like any of us and sometimes, even harder as they live in a glass bowl, watched by millions of prying eyes of people. And, there are even some cases that there are fans who sometimes think they own their idols and have a say so on how they should live their personal lives off camera. This k-drama has effectively shown the other side of the fence.

(6) I have to praise one of the things I found great about this k-drama. I, often, have this quirky irritation when the character of the story supposedly has lived or studied in the US or abroad and, yet, the actor playing the part can’t hardly utter properly even 1 or 2 sentences of English. This is one of the few k-dramas that depicted a character who studied in the States and can actually speak English well that’s truly befitting to that role. K-dramas should often get Kim Ji Suk and Han Ye Seul or other English speaking k-actors or even actors who really try to learn and pronounce the English lines on these roles with this background to make the character believable.

(7) This is also one of the very few k-dramas that was able to strike a balance on the stories of all the characters. Although, majority of the focus still stays with the love story between Sa Jin Jin and Gong Ji Won, but, the side stories of others were given much significant inputs and importance without getting lost on its way and not made them either boring or confusing.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

There’s really nothing I can badly comment on this k-drama. The stories were directed, written and depicted by great actors in a realistic but totally entertaining manner. I believe this is truly one of underrated dramas that should have been given much attention by k-drama addicts out there. Kudos!!!
