Synopsis:

Ha Chae-Yoon is a respected negotiator of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. She and her team under Captain Jung have gone difficult cases which doesn’t make room for her to have a personal life. She would have been happy for it to stay that way until one fateful day she needs to interrupt her vacation to deal with a negotiation of a hostage taking of Yoo Yeon-Joo. The result of this case affected her so much that Ha Chae-Yoon decided to resign from her post. But, this didn’t go the way she intends it to be as she was ordered to take over a hostage negotiation of Captain Jung and a reporter abducted in Bangkok by Min Tae-Gu’s group. She didn’t understand at first what’s going on until little by little her team figured out and revealed what Min Tae Gu, a Korean arms dealer but a UK citizen, really wants to negotiate and why it is relevant that Ha Chae-Yoon must be the negotiator.

My Review:

I have been waiting for this film to be released in video for so long since it was released in cinemas. Considering that the main leads are Son Ye-Jin and Hyun Bin, it wasn’t surprising that it turned out to be that good and entertaining to watch.

So, What do I Like About this K-Film?

(1) Hyun Bin as Min Tae-Gu is a revelation to watch on this film. He shed the romantic guy image and totally became a villain that’s not 2 dimensional. He excellently portrayed his role as Min Tae-Gu as a cruel bastard who has no qualms in sacrificing other people’s lives including children to get what he wanted. Yet, in the end, he made his character sympathetic but real. He is both good and evil which means just human.

(2) Son Ye-Jin as Ha Chae-Yoon gave another spectacular performance on this film. She’s able to viscerally express her character’s emotions without overacting especially in difficult situations she can’t reveal her emotions during her negotiation with Min Tae-Gu. She’s one of my ultimate korean actresses, who emanates both beauty and talent.

(3) The film is riveting to watch and though, the topic has been done a lot of times in hollywood films, the director and writer were able to make something uniquely their own. It was never boring and typical.

(4) The story was able to run its course with unexpected surprises for the audience. It was able to present the plot with a good level of unpredictability and make the audience understand why with very little or even no wasted scenes to unfold the backstory of the characters.

(5) It is one hell of an entertaining film
