My Review:

I watched this k-drama because of Jang Ki Yong. I first saw him at “My Mister” and even if his role there is brief and a villain, he left a mark to me. Not only that he is such a good looking guy but he does have a talent and really a good actor. Thus, I ended up watching “Go Back Couple” even if I don’t particularly like Jang Na Ra. Glad I did as he didn’t disappoint me, so, when the news came that he will be the lead actor of this K-drama instead of Nam Joo Hyuk, how can I resist? And, though, I really hate watching k-dramas while being aired and this k-drama looks very dark and tragic, he again, in my book, truly shine as an actor here and there’s simply no regret in waiting week after week until the subtitled episode of this k-drama gets released.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) As I’ve mentioned, Jang Ki Yong has in him to be one of the hallyu stars in the future. He both got the looks and the talent. He just needs a script that will even make his star shines brighter. His performance on this k-drama is definitely a step towards that and he made viewing this k-drama worth every second of it. My experience of watching him in “My Mister” was like what I felt when I first saw the love of my life in the K-world, Kwon Sang Woo. And, saying that truly means something especially since his role in “My Mister” is the total antithesis of Kwon Sang Woo’s role in “Stairway to Heaven”. That’s how great his impact to me as an a audience at my age.

(2) This is the first time I saw on a k-drama that the young actors playing the adult leads’ counter-parts made such a great impact in their performances to the point that I felt that the backstory was indeed worthy to watch and can even stand alone as is. Nam Da Reum as the younger Na Moo, who often plays a lot as the younger version of the leads in many k-dramas is one heck of a talented actor considering his age. Like Jang Ki Yong, I truly believe that this young man will have the same bright future as him. Ryu Han Bi as the younger Nak Won is spot on with doing her role. In fact, she’s even better than Jin Ki Joo, the actress playing Nak Won’s adult version. Kim Sang Woo as the younger Hyun Moo, Lee Ye Won as the younger Suh Jin and Jung Yoo-An as the younger Gil Moo Won also do so well on their performances. It was such a treat to watch.

(3) I must commend the supporting actors here on this k-drama as they’ve really done well in all of their roles but I feel I need to specially mention the talented performance of Seo Jung Yeon as Chae Ok Hee. I always see her in a lot of k-dramas in supporting roles but I think this is the one that she truly shine. And, Heo Joon Ho as Yoon Hee Jae, who is really scary as a psycho killer. He doesn’t say much but when does and acts on it, it gave me the chills.

(4) I like that it retained the flow of the characters. No sudden change of heart for no reason at all just to satisfy the craving of “happily ever after” scenario.

(5) It also end in a realistic note of letting things go in the past you can’t change and forgiving and comforting oneself for what happened, so, one can move forward. It had plainly revealed the reason behind its title.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

There’s not much I can gripe about this K-drama because I must admit I was too busy appreciating the handsomeness of Jang Ki Yong. Having said that, there’s some things that could have been done to make it better but it is not something that’s detrimental that will relieve me from being fascinated to this dark k-drama and so far out from the usual happy romcom I do love and enjoy watching.

(1) The leading actress, Jin Ki Joo as Han Jae Yi or Gil Nak Won is quite weak in her performance here. She’s completely overshadowed by his leading man as well as other supporting actors. I felt that another much talented actress would have been better. I don’t know who will that be that can also compliment the strong presence of Jang Ki Yong but definitely not Suzy Bae, the first choice to play this role. This role is quite difficult to perform as there’s an inner conflict of loving a man whose father killed her parents. I think the chemistry I felt between Jang Ki Yong and IU in “My Mister” even if IU’s character in “My Mister” fully despises Jang Ki Yong’s character would probably work much better here than Jang Ki Yong and Jin Ki Joo and IU and Lee Sun Kyun in “My Mister”. IU was actually quite good in her performance on “My Mister” and there’s a mismatched in the pairing of these k-dramas, just saying.

(2) The police on this k-drama as usual like most k-dramas or any dramas for that matter to heighten the suspense of the scenes and make the lead shine, looks stupid and incompetent. There are so many chances that they could have done better at drawing an intelligent and logical assumptions here to catch Yoon Hee Jae and the other psychos but did not utilize it as the goal is always for dramatic purposes. I just wish that some times directors of dramas and films will at least make it less conspicuous about it.

(3) Like other k-dramas who seems not to take care of the minute details when it comes to injuries and medical treatments that’s truly easy to do and will not require a medical background to make the scenes in hospitals, recuperating period and treatments a bit more believable.

(4) There’s something lacking in the confrontation between Yoon Na Moo and Yoon Hee Jae. Although, I must admit that the deal of conflict is more psychological than physical but something is still missing. Maybe Yoon Hee Jae should have had his face more focused on the scene while he realized he didn’t really have a control over Yoon Na Moo and less on the flashbacks. The intensity of the scene got minimized because of these flashbacks that I believe not necessary for intelligent viewers.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? Yes
