My Review:

Lee Sun Kyun is one of those actors that I don’t particularly have a thing with his looks but love his talent, thus, I got interested to watch this K-Drama. Although, I must honestly say, I had certain reservations on doing so because just on this k-drama poster, the photos already depicts tragedy and heavy drama. But, I forge on especially since learning that the director is the director of “Misaeng”, a K-drama that I love. In a way, I didn’t regret watching this but this is not the k-drama that I can say one will enjoy because it is entertaining. It is truly about the harsh realities of life and what it does bring to the audience is that one can get to appreciate one’s blessings if one is not in that dire situation as Lee Ji Ahn or if you are, there’s still hope while one is still alive.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) It has a very somber and sad feel on the entire k-drama which I thought I can only lasts 3-4 episodes as I really don’t like too realistic k-dramas but for some reason I got invested on the story of the leads, Lee Sun Kyun as Park Dong Hoon and IU as Lee Ji Ahn and didn’t realize I was already entrenched with the story. There’s something about it that I can’t point my fingers on that just made me interested to continually watch it.

(2) I must applaud on the excellent performance of IU here. She has really grown since “Scarlet Ryeo”. I thought it is going to be awkward to see her partnered with a much older actor as Lee Sun Kyun but the story isn’t really romantic. And, after awhile you root that they can be together.

(3) Though the casts were great as a whole but Jang Ki Yong as Lee Gwang Il took the spotlight for me. He was able to portray his conflicting emotions for Lee Ji Ahn, intense hatred and love.

(4) As always Lee Sun Kyun as Park Dong Hoon delivered a stellar performance and made me want to watch this k-drama even if it is dark and tragic.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

(1) I find the side stories of Park Dong Hoon’s unemployed brothers uninteresting and boring. Watching middle aged man who have nothing to do but leached on their ageing mother, though, realistic in this life is not something I enjoy watching. I found myself fast forwarding their scenes because their angsts and mantra about their situations are not really enjoyable to watch.

(2) I really didn’t like that there’s so many side stories and some do irritates me as nuances that didn’t capture my interest even for a second.

(3) I didn’t appreciate much that even in the ending they spent more air time on the stories of the other brothers rather than the ending between Park Dong Hoon and Lee Ji Ahn. In a way, I felt that the production of this k-drama caved in to the social conservatism of Korea that resulted to avoidance of any physical intimacy between leads considering one is married in real life and the age gap between the actors, thus, the story between them fell a little bit flat for me and could have been better if this kind of mindset didn’t come into play. The depiction and development of their relationships would have been better.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? Yes
