My Review:

I watched this k-drama because I’ve read a lot of good reviews. True enough, it was riveting to watch especially the pace was fast and the story is intriguing. However, the twist kinda destroyed the bubble of my enjoyment and the ending made me regret not sleeping to do a marathon of watching it. I wasn’t expecting a happy ending like the typical romcoms I love to watch as this k-drama has a mature theme from the very beginning but it was the message of the ending in regards to women wanting and desiring to achieve more than being a housewife and a mother that bothered me. It sort of showed that women can’t be happy if we choose to be ambitious and sometimes be ruthless because when you are a woman, you don’t have the right to be so.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) It is nice to see veteran actors perform and showcase their talents. Kim Nam Joo as Go Hye Ran and Ji Jin Hee as Kang Tae Wook were excellent from beginning to end. All the actors made it work for me to stay glued on the screen and wanting to know what’s next.

(2) I love initially how excellent the story was depicted and portrayed by talented actors. It really captured me especially that it is very rare to find matured k-dramas that are not a snooze fest. It also reverberate what I have said in one of my reviews and will say it again here that I believe people are not really born good but are born selfish. We only learn not to be one when we truly love another person which mostly shows when we become a parent. Being selfish doesn’t mean all bad but it just means, we think and act for ourselves first before someone else. And, in the end, it sorta make sense as we can’t give something we don’t have. Just like this story, Go Hye Ran, can’t give all the men who love her something she didn’t have until she learns to love.

(3) I like that the characters are not perfect. They have their own flaws and just like what Ha Myung Woo’s character said, “Sometimes we need to let go because we all act base on how we can survive in this world. Although, it doesn’t justify all that we do, we all can understand as we are all the same, just doing things so we can live.”

(4) I must say the wardrobe department of this k-drama has very good taste. I love all the professional looks of the characters especially Go Hye Ran. It was just oozing of class and style. It is like watching fashion week.

(5) I really can feel the pain of Kang Tae Wook and Seo Eun Joo. You can’t help but empathized. And, I am flabbergasted that a youthful love of Ha Myung Woo can stand the test of time and even lead to sacrificing one’s own life.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

This could have been a perfect k-drama if the writer and the director didn’t mess up bringing a twist that can be understandable to some extent but poorly executed and an ending that left me cold.

(1) If there’s one thing I keep on saying in my reviews, I love k-dramas, but, it really pisses me off when police and legal procedures are murdered just to suit the need to create a scenario in the story. Like this one, how can you arrest someone as a prime suspect just because of a brooch left in the scene and that you’re the last person that talked to the victim based on the assumptions of the witness? Why collect everything including other stuff not related to the case in the news room? And, more unbelievable speculations both by the police and prosecutors just to trump a case. It is unbelievable that it can really be done in a well-developed country like South Korea. Does these things even make sense?

(2) I am most of the time frustrated with Go Hye Ran’s character. Her fault is not because she’s ambitious but her lack of sensitivity with the people around her. Such as, why didn’t she address the issue of Kevin Lee after she made a confession of her story to her husband, Kang Tae Wook? She knows that what’s more important to him. I just don’t get her sometimes. She holds speaking the truth to a high standard in her profession yet she can’t speak it out with the men who loves her when necessary?

(3) From the moment that the real killer was revealed, I know that it will not have a happy ending. However, some of the premise of the k-drama irks me especially the end of message of the story. Go Hye Ran’s misery is not because of her ambition and wanting to be better at what she does. Given that she’s not perfect and has done major mistakes against her husband but her drive to be better from where she came from shouldn’t be the basis of her deserving not to be happy in the end. People make their own decisions and should be responsible for it. So, every character in the story should be responsible with their own actions. Why is it when a woman is ambitious, it connotes to others of being a negative trait. Men do far worse to achieve their ambitions. Besides the backend story is something that bothers me. Go Hye Ran was sexually assaulted and it is her fault? Really?

(4) I was totally irritated with the character, Kang Ki Joon, a detective, who runs along solely on his gut feel and keeps on trying to fit the evidences according to what he believes in. He is actually the main reason why everything got into a mess in the first place as he base his assumptions as facts and doesn’t care for the consequences his personal opinions can bring to others. He just gets into my nerves and there are a lot of stupid detectives like that in these world who prefer to speculate and create scenarios in their head rather than looking for real evidence.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? Yes.
