My Review:
I watched this drama because I’m a sucker for ugly ducklings and under dog stories. It was a slow start for me to warm up with this K-Drama, however, as it goes on the 5th episode…oh…wow…the fire of interest got me burning really hot. I didn’t really like the look of the lead female but in the end it was fitting to the story which inexplicably make sense, thus, giving consistency to the story. The director didn’t outwardly transform her to look beautiful for the audience but rather made her more beautiful inside which it made it more real for me. I think this is how she was able to make all the three male characters be utterly and helplessly in love with her. With all her flaws physically and even her conditions, her inner self shines as the story unfolds. I also like that the story wasn’t hurried and even the transition of things happening was done in a pace that is more believable and realistic. After all, this drama is about the value of giving time to what’s truly important to us, to live in truth and the capacity to forgive. It doesn’t miraculously and suddenly make every character or situations becomes okay. They unfold the story towards the end same way the message it wants to leave the audience… that when life challenges happen, it doesn’t only need for truth to be there and the needed time to heal but, most importantly, to be able to learn the ability to forgive. Forgive oneself first so one can forgive others. That’s the essence and beauty of this drama for in the end, it was worthy for me to spend time with it rather than do some real useful work waiting for me and to forgive myself for choosing to do so…and…that’s the truth.
So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?
(1) Although, the story deals about beauty and how we tend to judge others through what we see than who they are, this K-Drama tackled the issue in a more endearing way rather than typical way of making Cha Hong Do become physically beautiful does providing a justification for both men finally falling in love with her.
(2) The story progresses in a manner that provides just the right time for the characters to unfold and process their dilemma, thus, it gives the audience a sense of realism on the time frame while it is actually just going to happen within the 16 episodes.
(3) I like the delivery of the actors on their characters. No one in this K-Drama that I will actually cringe in shame even if these actors are not the heartthrob or the most popular in blogs and posts in the K-Drama world. They all actually look normal to me, so, you get more focus on the story rather than their looks.
What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?
It is not a perfect K-Drama. It actually started a bit slow for me and I thought at first I will not be able to last to watch another episode, however, there’s something interesting that made me watch the next, then, the next. What initially turned me off on this K-Drama is not even the slow start but it shows the one thing I truly hate about K-Dramas, it is how they depict people of supposedly of high caliber in their field of profession or expertise yet they act totally the opposite such as special detectives that don’t follow SOP procedure that any rookie detective would know or such as the initial introduction of the character here, Ko Yi Suk, a psychiatrist yet acts like an idiotic person without a medical degree towards people with mental disability or with special challenge. I mean…hello…I sometimes wonder if these characters are doing what they are doing because that’s the way it is in Korea or the writers are creating characters that are so arrogant enough that they act totally unprofessional for the field they are supposed to be great at. I hope it is the latter because honestly, sometimes the idiocy is not even based on logic due to the story, it was like it is just the way it is and, that rankles me to no end.
Would I recommend this K-Drama? Yes, much better than a lot of 2015 K-Dramas
