My Review:

I watched this k-drama because of Song Joong Ki. He is one of my favorite actors of all times, not only because he is such a pretty boy but he is such a great actor. He has depth when he acts his characters. I’m also quite curious about how he will be with Kim Ji Won being her leading man. It seems to be adulterous for them to be together especially if you’re into DOTS which I was, lol! I had high expectations on this k-drama because of the cast and what seems to be a grandous production. In the end, it was generally okay but something was missing that I can’t put my finger on and got even more frustrating with an ending like that.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) Song Joong Ki as Eunseom and Saya gave a stellar performance even if he is probably going through some difficult times during the shoot due to his real challenges at home. Song Joong Ki became popular and loved especially after “Descendants of the Sun” not only because he has the charismatic appearance as mentioned above but he is one of the very few elite korean actors who is gifted a talent to act. You forget he is Song Joong Ki and remember his character instead,

(2) Kim Ji Won has really bloomed as an actress but it still feels weird for me to see her being the love interest of Song Joong Ki in this k-drama. DOTS made such an impact to me as a fan that it seems seeing her and Song Joong Ki in romantic scenes instead of Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki felt weird and unsettling. However, Kim Ji Won has indeed became one of few k-drama actresses that was able to make a huge impression of doing a supporting role in a k-drama series and was catapulted her to leading roles on her next projects. She excellently performed her talent here even if she doesn’t have a dialogue on certain scenes, you can actually hear what her character is thinking and feeling.

(3) I am impress with the details of the production, the probably painstakingly created set or organization of location, costumes and make-up to show the audience a truly different world from our current one. These really did make a difference in creating a whole new world and period.

(4) All the supporting casts including  extras gave stellar performances, thus, even if sometimes the story is about power play among the tribes and sometimes difficult to follow due to too so many characters with difficult names that’s hard to remember, plus to mention the language barrier where I depend solely on English translation, the actors were able to all work together in unity as a cast to successfully bring life to the story even if sometimes what’s happening gets lost in translation.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

(1) My main issue on this k-drama is the ending. After supposedly having 3 seasons  divided into 3 parts with 6 episodes each – “Part 1: Children of Prophecy”, “Part 2: Turning Sky, Rising Ground”, and “Part 3: Arth, The Prelude to All Legends”, a lot of the story of the characters were left open ended. I don’t mind endings like this but this one is too much. It seems the main conflicts and what really happened to the characters were not resolved. It is like watching 18 hours of k-drama that shows only the journey of each main characters until they kinda reach their intermediary goals, for Tagon to be the King; for Taealha to be with Tagon and be the Queen; for Eunseom to have enough followers to free the captured Wahan tribe; For Saya to have freedom and be recognized as son by Tagon and for Tanya to have the power enough to wait for the coming back of Eunseom. The end goals were never shown. It would have been better if the production states that this is just Season 1 rather the pretentious 3 Seasons as the network claims.

(2) I often read that netizens keep on comparing this as a Korean version of Game of Thrones, which I have yet to start watching, but, personally, k-dramas as it evolves as to what it is now always provide its own unique stamp and flavor on its productions and delivery of story lines whether it maybe an adaptation or an inspiration from other foreign TV series. This k-drama may not have excited me as the same way as I felt with DOTS due its numerous characters and difficult names to remember and a bit slow sometimes in pacing but, at the end of the day, it is still a good k-drama to watch.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? It is okay especially if you’re a fan of Song Joong Ki as an actor.
