Crash Landing On You

Synopsis:

Captain Ri Jung Hyuk was a budding pianist before he became a part of the Korean People’s Army 5th Company but his brother suddenly died. So, he left his dream and continue his brother’s mission and tried to find what happened to him. While Yoon Se Ri is a very rich and successful businesswoman who established a well known fashion brand, Se Ri’s Choice. On the outside, she looks very happy with everything she can ever want in life but in reality, she’s very lonely. She has siblings who are doing everything to oust her to become the CEO of her father’s conglomerate business and a mother who abandoned her. So, she likes to try adventurous stuff like sky diving which ended her landing in North Korea and in the hands of Captain Ri Jung Hyuk. She has to survive in a dangerous and unchartered territory. To get back to South Korea, she needs the help of Captain Ri Jung Hyuk and the 5th Company, that may put all of them into jeopardy.

My Review:

When I first read that Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin will pair up again after their successful movie, “The Negotiation”, in a romantic movie with the twist of characters living in North and South Korea, how can I simply resists? It has all the formula of all the things I love. Great and favorite actors in it and intriguing plot plus a romcom, which is my cup of tea with K-dramas. Moreover, there’s been such a long drought of great romcoms. Unfortunately, it hasn’t truly live up to my expectations. There’s no magic felt like what I felt when I first watched the first episodes of DOTS. In fact, while I am writing this review, the things I didn’t like comes to my mind rather than the things I do like. This is not so bad but I wish it could have been better.

So, What do I Like About this K-Drama?

(1) Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin as usual provided well their talents on this K-Drama even if I can’t fully connect with their love story as they seem detached with each other in portraying their roles. They are still the best for me as K-drama actors. Although, Hyun Bin seems to be not on his A-Game in making sure his projects lately will really provide a reflection of the best he generally gives like his previous and old K-Dramas such as “The Secret Garden”. This one and the last one he did with Park Shin-Hye, “Memories With The Alhambra”, were both a bust for me. I don’t know what gives? It seems big production and great actresses as leading ladies, don’t automatically follow great story.

(2) I like Captain Ri’s Company 5 especially Lee Sin-Young as Park Kwang-Beom and Yoo Su-Bin as Kim Ju-Meok. They are both so adorable. Park Kwang-Beom’s quiet, unassuming but attractive character. And, Kim Ju-Meok’s addiction to K-Dramas and watching the more than 20 years ago “Stairway To Heaven”. The scene with him and Choi Ji Woo as herself was such a delight. I probably would have felt the same way as he felt when he saw his idol, although, probably with mine, I rather have Kwoon Sang Woo sitting there than Choi Ji Woo. After all, “Stairway To Heaven” and Kwoon Sang Woo are the reason why I became a K-Drama addict in the first place.

(3) I feel for the people who lives in North Korea. They were so suppress that they don’t know any other life than the one dictated to them by their government. This is one of the times I feel bless for being born in a country that may not be that great, but, at least has democracy and freedom. I always believe that one of the things we are bless with because we really didn’t have a choice is the country where you are born.

(4) I love the fighting scenes of Hyun Bin. Although, they are probably something you can’t actually do for real but still they are very enjoyable to watch.

What I do Not Like About this K-Drama?

As I mentioned above, there’s something lacking on this K-drama even with the star-studded lead actors in it. I can’t exactly put a finger on it because it wasn’t that bad but the “let down” feeling is what I majorly felt. Probably I expect too much from a production of 2 of my favorite all time Korean actors, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin.

(1) Unlike their movie in “The Negotiation” which plays the emotions of Hyun Bin’s character being enamoured with Son Ye Jin’s character and the film nor the characters were a far cry from being a romcom genre, this film provide more chemistry between their characters than this K-drama. I can’t feel a real connection between the 2 actors and though, they are fabulous in acting their characters, it was just it, you feel they are precisely just acting them rather than being their characters. They seem detached even if they were portraying romantic scenes. You know what I mean?

(2) I really couldn’t careless about the side stories especially the North Korean villagers’ issues including the second lead romance story between Seo Dan and Koo Seung Joon. I just simply find the former nonsensical and the latter boring.

(3) I usually find big Korean production romcoms successfully provide an OST that a fan like me will get addicted to. Even at least 1 song, but, this one has not given any that can make me connect with their love story with their song.

Would I recommend this K-Drama? It’s Okay.
